alternative ed. for ASD kids

I had been of the frame of mind that Steiner or Montessori ed. would be a less than ideal choice for kids on the spectrum but a friend Hi if you are reaidng S!) was just telling me that they had heard good things about Steiner and ASD kids and were heading that way with their little one.

Does anyone have any good articles or info on the pros and cons?

Im unfamiliar with Steiner - is it more structured?? Or less?

I think Steiner is less structured. DD2 goes to Montessori, and just seeing what they do there, I am thinking that Montessori would have been way better for DD1. It is very structured, and I think she would have done well!!

Yeah Chris thrives on structure and routine. He likes to know what is going on/going to happen in advance.

I dont think there are any steiner or Montessori options for us around here, not close anyway.

yeah I though montessori sounded more suitable than Steiner. They have some Montessori style play at Mikko's preschool and he is always into the 'pouring' area Steiner though just sounds like it would be really hard as apparently it involves a lot of imitation at primary level and most ASD kids would struggle wouldn't they?

We looked at Montessori but I was put off when they said they "reserve the right to limit the number of children with special needs at their schools". Riiiiight.

The Montessori DD2 goes to has 1 special needs kid there already - I figure they don't want more than one at a time because it is hard to manage with all the other kids. I can't recall them saying anything specifically about it though. I think all Montessori schools are independantly owned so they set their own "rules" about these sort of things. I think I do understand where they are coming from...

yeah I am kinda in two very different minds on that one. As a mama to a child with special needs of course one kinda gets one's back up a bit when you hear that but then I have to admit if they accepted my kid I'd prefer it if they didn't have too many kids with higher needs so he didn't miss out on the extra help he will inevitably need.

DD2 goes to Montessori, but I have no idea I don't think they have tech, but I could be mistaken...
